Clinical Studies in Children with Nondiphtheritic Croup Syndrome



Abstract
This is a clinical study of 47 cases of nondiphtheritic croup syndrome seen in the pediatric department, Chungnam National University Hospital from January to December 1975. Results were as followings:
1. The seasonal incidence was highest in spring (40.4%) and next in winter (34.4%). Age incidence was highest in group below 5 years of age (68.0%). There showed male preponderance with sex ratio of 4 to 1.
2. Most patients (74%) was admitted to the hospital within 48 hours after onset.
3. The common clinical manifestations were difficult respiration (89. 3%), barking cough (76.6%), hoarseness (74.4%), injected throat (78.7%), chest retraction (67. 2%) and cyanosis (15%).
4. Throat culture yielded no organism (68%), hemolytic streptococci (8.5%), streptoc¡þocci (6.4%) and etc.
5. Tracheostomy was carried out on 25.5% of patients and 66.6% of patient with trach¡þeostomy was over 5 year of age,
6. The most patients (83%) were discharged in good condition within one week after admission.
7. The complication of bronchitis occurred in 3 patients with tracheostomy. 8. There was no fetal case in this study.
